Frustrated - Can't get leather to take flame
I need some helpful advice. I am 20yo and just got my own place. I have a fireplace so, now I can burn shoes anytime I want. I have tossed shoes into campfires before, but I want to see one slowly burn on its own. I have four older sisters, and I have some of their old shoes, that I play with. I am so eager to burn a pair, but I just can't seem to get them to catch fire. I have wadded up paper and stuffed it into the shoes. I light the paper, and it burns a little and goes out. It scorches the inside of the leather a little, but it won't catch. I have sprayed lysol into them and it burns, but soon goes out without burning the leather. What can I do if I want to set a leather shoe on fire without putting it into a fire that is already going. I just want to put the flame to the shoe and watch it slowly catch and burn. I really want to see leather shoes burn. I have been trying to burn this one pair of my sister's leather loafers for a day or two, and all I have is a shoe that is slightly scorched on the inside. Please offer ideas.

Gasoline would be bad indoors in a fireplace. But your idea made me thing of mineral spirits. It worked great! I burned a pair of my sisters old top-siders. The leather burned great! The shoes curled up good too.Wetshoe wrote:uh... gasoline?

You can try adding a little alcohol or lighter fluid, just be careful. You can also try putting the shoes on a cooking sheet and some heat under the cooking sheet, so its hot but there are no flames. The heat helps the leather burn. Then light the shoe on fire and let the flame slowly eats the shoe.
Also, if you have flux leather (pleather, fake leather) they melt really well, so with those, try melting them with heat and no flames.
Please post pictures or video of your arts. We really want to see every step of the burning. From whole to ashes.
Best regard.
