So I tried without lubricant and it was totally uncomfortable and a bit painful. Would something like vaseline work well or is a full-on durex lube better?

depends on the shoes, usually smoother bottoms feel better. Vaseline works good but too much can be too slippery. Baby oil and lotion is ok but baby oil "gel" works good. coconut oil works good and smells good. spit, pussy juice and pre cum all dry out before you can bust a nut.

I like using whatever foot lotion my wife uses to get more of her foot scent.
