wide size

when a shoe is labled "Wide", what is wide? the toe box or the ankle?

The toe box is the wide area near the forefoot. Give a little more wiggle room for toes and the foot to spread out if you are just a regular width.
My wife wears Brooks in wide, but she's a regular and she said the wides feel more comfortable and not as tight on top of her foot.
